Russian light vehicles have traditionally been popular in Iran, and the BTR-60, for example, is an effective way to carry out rescue operations in times of disasters such as floods.
In the 1970s, Iran began purchasing first-generation BMP armored vehicles, although the Iranian military leadership had mainly tried to acquire American or British-made weapons. At the moment, about 200 BMP-1 vehicles and 400 BMP-2 vehicles are still used in the Iranian army, which have been modernized by equipping them with Russian-made Kornet-E anti-tank systems.
Moreover, the designs of Russian armor formed the basis for the Iranian-made “BMP” armored vehicles, which it called “Barq”. There are also Russian “ZU-23-2” anti-aircraft guns, 120mm mortars and other Russian-made military equipment.
