Benjamin Briere, a French man is jailed in Iran for more than 18 months
on espionage charges that he rejects claiming as fabricated. He has now begun a hunger strike to protest his continued detention.
He was arrested after he flew a mini remote controlled helicopter in the desert near the Turkmenistan-Iran border and charged with espionage and propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Saeid Dehghan his Iranian lawyer said,
“Apparently, it does not matter that a foreign tourist is spending his second (Christmas) in Iranian prisons” “What is Mashhad’s Revolutionary Court waiting for before investigating the political charges of who has been detained for 570 days?”

and foreigners in recent years, mostly on espionage charges against them
Iran is also holding a French-Iranian academic, Fariba Adelkhah, who was detained in 2019 and sentenced in May 2020 to five years in prison on charges of national security violation.
In October 2020, she was moved to a house arrest facility Rights activists have accused Iran of arresting dual citizens and foreigners to try to win concessions from other countries. Meanwhile, Tehran denies holding people for political reasons.
